Happy Tuesday:

Congratulations Vols All-SEC First-Team, per release: Mark Sears, Alabama

Johni Broome, Auburn

Zyon Pullin, Florida

Antonio Reeves, Kentucky

Tolu Smith, Mississippi State

Dalton Knecht, Tennessee

Zakai Zeigler, Tennessee

Wade Taylor IV, Texas A&M

Dalton Knecht Is POY In SEC: Who else? This is the first time the Vols have had an SEC Player of Year since Grant Williams back to back in 2018 & 2019. What an incredible story Knecht is. Just amazing. This is the single best season by a Vol in my lifetime (1978 on). The SEC has gotten much better since Grant's years and DK destroyed a very good SEC.

Congratulations To ZZ Stop: Amazing! What a year for him. A guy that's worked his rear off to get there. Just incredible fight from that young man. He's such an amazing story that it's taken for granted. ZZ can't be 5-7 and he's SEC Defensive Player Of The Year.

How Long Do We Want Vols To Last In Nashville? A real debate has been raging in Big Orange Country in terms of what we want from the conference tournament. Keep in mind that history shows a good showing in a conference tournament is many times a harbinger for a run to come. 14 of the last 22 national champions have lost in their conference tournament. But every national champion since 2000 has made at least the semifinals of their conference tourney.

Therefore I'm amending my early take. Tennessee probably needs to win two games in the SEC Tournament and get to the conference final. And If you're going to get there you might as well win it.

Another Point Of View On Barnes Saying DK Needs To Get Others Involved More: Talking to people from around the program including our silent partner Y, I think Barnes' logic goes as follows. People around Barnes said what UT's head coach was thinking in his comments is that DK has to get other guys involved. The staff feels like sometimes the lesser guys go into a shell and get disconnected from the game when they don't get involved early on and just start watching DK. They know Knecht can turn it on any time, but they think the formula is for some other guys to get established early on and then let Knecht turn it on after the other guys are in a flow. This makes sense if you think about the Alabama & Auburn game model.

Jerry Palm Broke It Down Scientifically: Here are some highlights from our conversation. Tennessee North Carolina Arizona For The Final #1 Spot: 'It's really close. Tennessee is #1 right now but it's really close. The quality of their wins and strength of their schedule is what it will come down to for any team when it comes to seeding. It's really down to 3 teams. I keep Arizona there for now in the picture because the committee liked them a month ago and that matters. Comparisons come down to what stands out. Are significant wins better? Are significant losses telling. '

Why Is Tennessee Ahead Heading Into The Week: 'Tennessee has more quality wins than Zona and UNC. It's still subjective. But Tennessee's resume is better heading into the week.'

Palm On What The Committee Will Do On The One Line: 'The top 3 seeds from a month ago are set. Even though they've lost since then. It doesn't matter. The way it works from there is as follows..#4 will come from Tennessee, Arizona or UNC. Keep in mind that the overall #5 cannot get grouped with the overall #1.Bracketing is done by putting #1 out there first. From there it's 2, 3, & 4. Then #5 can't be placed with #1 but will get placed closest to home.

Palm On What Is SOS: 'Exactly strength of schedule. This is part of the NET. Important because the committee wants to see you do well against a good schedule. Plus margin of victory comes in here. Opponents' NET is more important than your own.'

Palm On How SOR Is Defined: 'This is an ESPN creation. Less influenced by margin of victory.'

Jerry Palm Has A Word Of Caution For Us This Week: 'Here's my advice on this ... Don't get too wrapped up in metrics. They're on team sheets. Again your ranking is less important than your opponent because your opponents are determined by quadrants. Quadrants conversation is important. The devil is in the details. For instance Florida is a tournament team while Washington isn't. The committee members don't understand these formulas. Ken Pom encouraged the committee several years ago not to use his ratings because they aren't about finding the best teams.'

'Voltellos Sweep Illini:

Tennessee extended its winning streak to 15 games with a weekend sweep of Illinois, needing a comeback victory on Sunday in the series finale.

The Volunteers are now 16-1 on the season.

Friday

Illinois struck first on a windy night with back-to-back doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning.

The Vols answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. Christian Moore doubled and then scored on Blake Burke’s double to tie it at 1-1. Then Billy Amick lined one over the wall in right center field for a 2-run home run to make it 3-1.

It was Amick’s team-leading 9th long ball of the season.

Cal Stark sent the first pitch of the bottom of the 2nd into the left field porches for his first home run of the season to make it 4-1.

Back-to-back doubles from Dylan Dreiling and Dean Curley extended Tennessee’s lead to 5-1 and chased the Illinois starter from the game in the bottom of the 6th.

AJ Causey gave up one run on six hits while striking out 12 and walking just one in six innings.

After Derek Schaefer led off the top of the 7th with a walk, lefty Andrew Behnke entered and stranded Illini on the corners.

Click to Performance Medicine!
Illinois threatened in the 8th, getting the first two batters on with hits but back-to-back strikeouts and then a fly out to left field kept it a 5-1 game.

The Vols added an insurance run in the 8th on Dreiling’s 4th home run of the season.

Kirby Connell gave up two runs on three hits to start the 9th inning before Marcus Phillip got the final two outs to earn his first career save.

Saturday Tennessee set season-highs in runs and hits in a 24-1 rout of the Illini.

The Vols scored at least two runs in every inning except the 4th.

Tennessee led 10-4 after four innings before a 48-minute rain delay.

Drew Beam earned the win after tossing five innings of 1-run ball.

The Vols hit five home runs, including a grand slam by Reese Chapman in the 6th inning.

Blake Burke was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a 3-run home run on the day.

Sunday A 2-out solo home run off the batter’s eye in centerfield gave Illinois an early 1-0 in the top of the 2nd inning.

The Illini added two more runs in the 3rd, first on sac fly to shallow right field and then on a 2-out, RBI double.

Tennessee had just one hit through four innings, a Billy Amick double in the 1st.

Hunter Ensley led off the bottom of the 5th with a pinch hit solo home run into the left field porches to cut the Illinois lead to 3-1.

It was Ensley’s first home run of the season.

Click to YMCA of East Tennessee!
Later in the inning, Blake Burke hit his second home run of the weekend to make it a 3-2 game. It was Burke’s 2nd home run of the weekend and 6th on the season. He now has 36 career long balls, five shy of tying the school record.

However, Burke was ejected from the game for chatting with Illinois dugout while rounding 3rd base. Both teams had been issued unsportsmanlike warnings earlier in the game. The series got chippy at times — something Tennessee is familiar with — and centered around Vols batters feeling like they were being quick-pitched. Because of his ejection, Burke will be suspended for tonight's game with Eastern Kentucky.

The Vols loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 6th. A Dean Curley sac fly tied it but a double play ended the threat.

Back-to-back 2-out walks in the 7th brought Kavares Tears to plate, who blooped a double down the left field line to give Tennessee its first lead of the game at 4-3.

After another walk loaded the bases, Robin Villeneuve hit the Vols’s 2nd grand slam in as many days to make it an 8-3 game.

Illinois loaded the bases in both the 8th and 9th innings but Nate Snead was able to get out of each jam.

Snead earned the win throwing six scoreless innings in relief.

Aaron Combs made his 2nd consecutive Sunday start for the Vols. He gave up three runs on four hits in three innings.

Notes:

— Chris Stamos was throwing in the bullpen late in Sunday’s game. Vitello mentioned he was available to pitch this weekend after exiting the midweek game vs High Point on February 27th.

— Blake Burke hit a team-high .556 (5-of-9) for the series with three doubles, two home runs, five runs scored and six RBIs while also drawing three walks. Illinois has better pitching than most of the Vols’ non-conference opponents but what’s most encouraging in recent games is Burke’s willingness to go the other way. Burke leads the SEC with eight doubles on the season, the majority of them going to left field.

— Tennessee hosts Eastern Kentucky at 6 pm tonight before traveling to Tuscaloosa to open SEC play this weekend. The Crimson Tide is 15-1 under first-year coach Rob Vaughn.

ICYMI: Highlights from Monday's Blog

Jerry Palm has the Vols as a #1 seed in his latest survey. He has the Vols heading west where they'll be placed with Arizona.

The Vols are set up comfortably to either be the 4th #1 seed or the first #2 seed. Either is a solid option, but the Vols would want to be a #1. I'll share below the reasons why.

Comparing Tennessee & UNC The Vols and Tar Heels are going to battle it out for the final #1 seed on the board. With Arizona losing over the weekend, they appear out of it and will be the #2 seed in the West. This means that either Tennessee or UNC will be the #1 seed in the West. Let's drill down from here ...

Vols are 24-7. Net 5. Ken Pom 5. SOR (Strength Of Record, Huge Metric) #5. KPI (Team sheet used by Committee similar to Ken Pom) #3. Torvik #6. SOS (strength of schedule) #9. Quad One 7-6. Quad One A (games vs best of the best top of bracket teams) 6-3. Quad 2 6-1. Quad 3 6-0. Quad 4 5-0. Road & Neutral 10-5.

UNC Is 25-6. Net 7. Ken Pom 8. SOR #4. KPI #5. Torvik #8. SOS #25. Quad One 7-4. Quad One A 4-2. Quad 2 6-2. Quad 3 7-0. Road and Neutral 11-5.

Other Considerations: Carolina Beat Tennessee by 8 at home on 11/29. The Vols called a timeout to run a play to get a 3 ball to make it look closer.

The Weekend Had To Close The Gap Between Tennessee & UNC: The Vols were pretty far ahead coming into Saturday. Tennessee losing to Kentucky hurt. As did Florida losing to Vandy thus falling from Quad One. Plus UNC beating Duke is huge for the Heels case.

If Vols Are A #2 Seed: Dallas From Knoxville - 840 Miles

Detroit From Knoxville - 510 Miles

Boston From Knoxville - 900 Miles

If the Vols are a #2 seed, they will go to one of these sites. They would be the #1 #2 seed, meaning they couldn't be put with the site of the #1 seed. That right now is Purdue in Detroit. This leaves Boston or Dallas. Both of these are decent distances. It seems to me that Tennessee would rather play Houston in Dallas as #2 seed than face UConn in Boston. UConn in Boston sounds like a great way to get put out of the tournament. Who is going to beat UConn in Boston? That sounds highly unfair. Looking at this is why, if you're the Vols, you really want to get a #1 seed and get grouped with Arizona.

The Advantage Of Being A #1 Seed For Vols: First round you draw a walkover. 16's are getting better, but you have a 99.9 percent chance to win as a #1 seed. Your second round is versus an 8 or 9 seed which is formidable. The Round of 16 is where you really feel an advantage. As a #1 you're going to see either a 4-13 or 5-12 matchup, which many years can mean beating some Cinderella #12 or #13 to get to the Elite 8. And this is a HUGE advantage over being a #2 seed where you have to see either a #3, #6, or a #11. And keep in mind that a few mid major final four teams were #11 seeds in recent years. One of the things that's hurt Rick Barnes at Texas and Tennessee is failing to land on the #1 line when he's had an opportunity. It's just a MAJOR advantage when you look into the mathematics.

Coming Out Of The West Can Be Really Good: 4 of UConn's National Championships were won coming out of the West. Last year, they beat Gonzaga in Las Vegas in the Elite 8 to get there. A #1 seed in the west is very much worth fighting for.

North Carolina Is In Action Thursday Versus Va Tech: We have to cheer for Va Tech to clip them and/or their next opponent, which would be Pitt or Wake Forest. Steve Forbes' guys will need a win. They need to scratch and claw to get in. Steve Forbes is the modern day Seth Greenberg. He's had very nice teams that just live on the bubble. This year is no different.

At This Point It's A Certainty That Tennessee & UNC Will Begin In Charlotte In First Round: They won't be grouped in the same region though. They'll just be placed there for pod purposes. So go ahead and buy your tickets to the first round. It's a stone cold lock that the Vols will play there. Duke losing over the weekend sealed this. It's not a choice either. It's about miles from campus.

It's Also A Certainty That Tennessee & UNC Are Fighting For Final #1 Spot:

Arizona is thought to be eliminated with the loss to USC over the weekend. They can't do enough in their conference tourney to get back.

ICYMI from Monday: Our UT Insider Orange Throat
Orange Throat
'T Club Team:

Random musings as the Basketball Vols absorb a stinging loss in the home finale:

THE KENTUCKY LONG RIFLES ... Shot the lights out at the Food Thom Saturday. The uber-talented Wildcats seized the initiative in this game from the start and took it to the #4 ranked Volunteers. This has to go down as one of Big Blue Nation's favorite wins at Knoxville in recent years, as this game went to the post with UK as a 7.5-point underdog to the SEC champion Vols on Senior Day.

WILL THERE BE LINGERING DAMAGE ... From this game to the Tennessee team's psyche and standing in the NCAA tourney? The Volunteers' appearance at the SEC tourney this week perhaps just became more important to address both concerns. On Friday, they'll either face a Mississippi State team fighting on the bubble to make the NCAA or an LSU team with nothing to lose. The good news is we wouldn't have a chance to see Kentucky until the Sunday title game. Not sure TGMD could stomach two losses to the Big Blue in a span of eight days.

RICK BARNES' 9TH TENNESSEE TEAM ... Finished 14-4, matching the 2022 team's league record but this team won the league outright. The biggest thing you don't want to copy from the '22 team is the second round exit in the NCAA tourney.

VESCO AND TRIPLE J'S OFFENSE ... Doesn't matter until it does. Let's all agree Rick Barnes' team could go all the way to the championship game in Phoenix and not see an offensive onslaught like they saw out of Kentucky. Let's also agree that Josiah Jordan-James gave a much better account of himself in his final game at The Thom than his teammate from Uruguay. It was sad to see Vesco struggle so badly after such a good career at Tennessee.

IT WAS ALSO ALARMING ... In its implications for the Big Dance. With Freddie Dilione's lack of progress, Jordan Gainey has played way more than he probably should be. No offense. Saturday, Gainey looked like a kid who didn't belong on the floor.

Follow Us On Twitter:
@TonyBasilio
THIS TIME LAST YEAR.... Vol staffers were telling the sheep in the UT basketball media corps that Dilione was going to be special. He was going to be different than all of the other freshman flops because he enrolled in January of 2023. National NBA talent evaluators were listing him on 2024 first round forecasts. Fourteen months in the Tennessee program hasn't done much to keep Dilione from the same fate as most freshmen in this program. He's played double digit minutes only once since early November, and that was in the blowout over Vandy. So, it's going to be sink or swim with Santiago, whose defense is still real good in most games.

BASEBALL VOLS WIN 15TH STRAIGHT ... In completing the sweep of Illinois. Tennessee's pitching was consistently good as usual, paced by A.J. Causey and Drew Beam with winning starts and Nate Snead getting the dub in relief yesterday. Blake Burke stayed on his heater with a 5-for-9 weekend that featured two homers and three doubles. The only thing that slowed Burke down was the home plate umpire who tossed him yesterday. Eastern Kentucky is up tomorrow and then it's on to Tuscaloosa to open the league with a good Alabama team.

LADY VOLS TO BE SHIPPED WEST? That's what Beano and Charlie Creme were projecting yesterday, improving K.J. Harper's squad to a 7-seed after the Lady Vols advanced to the semifinals and nearly knocked off #1 South Carolina. Beano thinks Tennessee will be sent to Los Angeles for the first round and would play 2-seed Southern Cal in round 2. Upset the Women of Troy and they move up the coast to Portland, OR for the regional.

It's a Love Story

Jared (the redneck from Roanoke, VA) thought the Taylor Swift coverage would end with the Super Bowl, but this love story isn’t going anywhere. In a game that was four hours and 18 minutes (that’s a total of 15,480 seconds). Swift only appeared for around 55 seconds! 55 SECONDS from the moment the game kicked off to the overtime touchdown.

Missouri Game Preview

The Vols did what they were expected to do against UConn. There's not really much to say about that game. The game this Saturday in Columbia, Missouri will decide whether or not this season is a failure in my opinion. If they Vols lose, they are staring at 8-4 and probably the Gator Bowl. The Vols are coming back to Neyland Stadium and I am returning after a discretionary bye week. I'll be honest with you. This year it seems like I've been writing the same preview over and over because the formula to win has been the same pretty much every SEC game. I didn't want to sound like a broken record so I needed a bit of a break from that.

I'll start with some general observations..... [more]
