A couple draft thoughts Posted: Tuesday, April 30th, 2013, 1:07 PM

Alright, all these draft experts are always wrong on people and I don't really know why. I mean really, if Al Davis thought Jarmarcus Russel was going to be a good pro then he should have fired himself. And if Bud Adams thought Vince Young was going to be a good pro, then he should have fired himself too. In general, if a player wasn't productive in college or if a player didn't handle success well in college then they most likely will not work out in the NFL. Another thing that I think doesn't really work too well based on history is taking a player for what they could be. I just don't think it works. For whatever reason, money really de-motivates a player who has a ton of developing to do.

Here are some QB's I would draft in this class and QB's who others want to draft that I wouldn't:

Geno Smith: I would't touch him. He wasn't a big winner in college. I don't think he's that intelligent and he'll have trouble learning an NFL offense.

Matt Barkley: I would take him but I would take him as a game manager. He's got the smarts, a good enough arm and he's played a ton of football. What happened at USC last year wasn't his issue IMO. I thought he played well. His defense sucked.

Sean Renfree: Why is he not been talked about that much? Cutcliff was his coach... and he took Duke to a Bowl game. That in and of itself should earn him a 1st round pick. He has a good enough arm, is obviously smart and he's played a bunch of football.

Ryan Nassib: Wouldn't touch him. I don't think he has a great arm. He is accurate but he wasn't really a big winner.

Landry Jones: I think he's the best QB in the draft. He won 40 career games, he has a huge arm, and is accurate & smart. I don't really know why he's not the top QB on the board.

EJ Manuel: I would draft him. I think he's been well coached in college, has a really good arm and is athletic. I also think he's one of the smarter QB's in the draft.

Mike Glennon: He has a fantastic arm, is highly intelligent, and ran a pro system in college. I said after the UT-NC St game he would be a much better pro than Tyler Bray and people called me dumb, stupid and whatever else they could think of. I was right. I think he's the 2nd best QB in the draft.

Tyler Bray: I wouldn't even take him as a free agent. If you knew what I knew about him you wouldn't either. He doesn't study film at all, he has horrible mechanics, and the bigger the moment the worse he plays.

Sleepers at QB: Jordan Rogers, just based on genetics you have to draft him, right? He has a good arm, is smart, pretty athletic. He didn't win like crazy but who does at Vandy?

Also Tyler Wilson will be a good pro. I'm not sure why draft people give his senior year debacle an excuse. It wasn't really his fault.

WR's: I'm not sure there are a ton of really good WR's in the draft. I'll give you who I think will pretty good pros and will be busts.

Good Pros: Nuke Hopkins, Ryan Swope, Keenan Allen, Cobi Hamilton, Da'Rick Rogers, Ace Sanders, Dan Buckner,

Busts: Cordarrelle Patterson (cant run routes, won't learn offense), Tavon Austin, Marquess Wilson.

I'm undecided on Hunter, I give last year a pass for him because of his knee surgery.

Thats enough for now. Enjoy the draft.

I really don't take much stock in spring games. Although I really thought the offense would play better than they did. The first two scrimmages were certainly better for the offense than the O&W game was but they also had WR's healthy for those scrimmages. The most disturbing thing to me for the offense was the completion percentage for the QB's. I think disturbing is the best way to describe it too. I tend to think it has more to do with the WR situation than how good or bad the QB's are. I've seen both the QB's play some fantastic football in the previous two scrimmages. I'll have more on the QB's later on in the week.

The biggest disappointment to me this spring has been the offensive line. I'm not sure if it's because we all have unrealistic expectations but to me, they haven't been dominant like everybody expects. I've said multiple times, a new scheme with new terminology means completely starting over. So to the fans, I say temper the expectations for the OL. It should also be noted Tiny Richardson didn't play in the spring game so that also doesn't help.

By the way, how bad was the 2nd string offensive line in pass protection? They have been equally as bad in the first two scrimmages in pass pro. Now, fast forward to when it's those guys turn to play. Scary.

I expected the defense to not roll coverage as much as they did. While they did not play overly complex, they still did more "junk" than I expected. The defense played sound as far as gap control goes.

Is it a good sign when a white WR is streaking right through the whole defense? Cody Blanc is athletic but he's no speed demon. Now, fast forward to the Oregon game...

The defense did look a ton better didn't they? They weren't overly impressive but they at least looked competent. The first string defense did a spectacular job of containing the run game. All they did was simply fill their gaps and play smart. The defensive backs didn't look too bad either. They played pretty sound, and they looked like they played their coverages too. We didn't see a WR wide open way down field because of a busted coverage like last year.

Kudos to the defense for their improvement in the spring. It should also be mentioned Curt Maggit didn't practice at all either. I see the defense being way better next year. Jancek is so much better than Sunseri, but I think I would be too.

How much trouble is the RB situation if Marlin Lane doesn't come back and Jabo Lee doesn't qualify? And Alden Hill is definitely better than Raijon Neal. Hill runs hard and brings the wood on contact. I just love how hard he plays. It seems to me like Neal shy's away from contact. Not so with Hill. He loves the contact. I like that.

I'll have more on the QB situation later in the week.

A few things to look out for at the spring game Posted: Thursday, April 18th, 2013, 5:00 PM

A couple things I'll be looking at as the Orange and White game takes place Saturday:

I'll be interested to see how simple the defense plays in the game. Why? Usually spring games are meant to be a showcase of the year to come. The defense won't be bringing any exotic blitzes. I just wonder how much they will roll coverages or try and confuse the QB's. Like I said, these spring games are meant to get fans excited for the next season so the defense will be simple to make the offense will look good. I fully expect the offense to score plenty of points and to look exciting.

Look For Alden Hill to run somebody over.

I stand by my thinking that Peterman is the better QB. After the O&W game, you tell me what you think.

The fact that Bajakian said only 50% of the offense was installed made me even more curious about if they are purposely not naming a starter so they can give Dobbs a real chance at being the guy. In my opinion they should have more installed but I guess it's more important to master something before learning new stuff. I just feel like there should be more urgency in the offenses installation. Maybe that's me, maybe not.

I'm definitely interested in how much the defense has improved since last Saturday's scrimmage. Like I said, they will be simple in what they do but I just want to see an improvement in tackling. It will also be interesting to see how the DB's do against some of the 2nd string WR's and walk ons. I think the O&W game will be a good measuring stick for the defensive backs because the WR's that will likely play majority of the snaps probably will not be starting next season.

Look or Jaron Toney to make some plays. The kid's a football player.

Look for Palardy to miss multiple FG's. Let's just say he hasn't improved at all. In fact, the Vol Colonel said he has been better at punting than at kicking and he was dead on in saying that. At this point, Palardy is the best Punter and Brodus is the best kicker.

I just want to see some decent football on Saturday. No stupid turnovers, no fumbles, no busted coverage or two players in one gap on defense. Just competent quality football. I don't think that's too much to ask.
